Limited liability coverage is the minimum level of liability a mover must assume, which comes included with every move at no additional cost. However, this basic coverage only satisfies some customers, so most moving companies offer full value protection at an additional cost. If a customer purchases full-value protection, the moving company will have to repair, replace, or refund each item lost or damaged at a fair market value.

Moves that require 200 to 1700 miles of travel take about 3-14 days on average. Moves under 200 miles usually only take one to three days, while moves that require travel above 1700 miles typically take anywhere from one to three weeks.

What Restrictions or Rules Do Long-Distance Moving Companies Have to Follow?

In terms of rules, federal law requires companies to have a USDOT license to execute long-distance moves. Companies cannot move hazardous items such as nail polish, nail polish remover, paint thinner, engine fluid, and household cleaning products. In addition, moving companies cannot complete long-distance moves without obtaining BIPD and Cargo Insurance Policies. Moving companies also have to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association in order to move across state lines. Since this registration has an expiration date, it needs to be renewed every two years.
